Attractions in Flagstaff

Often referred to as the Gateway to the Grand Canyon, and also home to North Arizona University, portions of Route 66 and Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff is an American city to be seen. Nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks surrounded by forests of pine trees and within an hour's drive from the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff has year-round activities and accommodations.

Flagstaff is home to many activities to suit any personality or age group. For the history buff, check out historic sites such as Route 66, travel the historic route of the Grand Canyon, or one of the National Parks nearby. For nature lovers, Flagstaff's obvious beauty is an easy pick. There is excellent hiking, photography opportunities and skiing.

Seek out guided tours for the most complete adventures, which usually include knowledgeable tour guides and a variety of stops. Around the Bend Adventures features a day hike in the Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona (with guide) as well as offering a day trip to surrounding areas, Indian ruins, extinct volcanoes, or customized trips to nearby Sedona (through the painted desert).

A wonderful activity for kids and adults alike is the Lowell Observatory, which was found over 120 years ago, in 1894. It is a non-profit astronomical and educational institution. Visitors can observe through telescopes and view exhibits, an interactive science center, safe viewing of the sun and more. There are guided tours in the day time, as well as multi-media programs, shows and special events scheduled throughout the year.

Another educational activity is The Arboretum, a botanical garden, nature center and research station. There are several miles of trails winding through one of the largest collection s of trees, shrubs and high country native plants in the United States. There are guided tours of the gardens, greenhouses and pond daily, and a live Birds of Prey program as well.
